The CIA's Response to Havana Syndrome

Updated: Apr 13, 2023

“We got this as a result of serving our country. And we deserve to be taken care of.”, said Erika Stith, a former CIA analyst in an interview with CBS News. While a multitude of affected US personnel have expressed concerns, many of them feel that the governments response had no sense of urgency, nor did they get specific information regarding what was actually going on, leaving many in the dark. Not only has it affected them financially, but mentally and physically as well. Specifically, it seems to be a common sentiment that the State Department's investigation was very disorganized and lacking relevant information.

After what seems like years of frustration with the CIA, State Department, and other government agencies, many affected personnel are now being compensated, and also receiving necessary medical care after the Havana Act of 2021 was passed by the Biden Administration. The CIA has also implemented measures to protect its personnel, such as providing them with personal protective equipment and training on how to mitigate the risk of exposure to potential attacks. Many people have sustained injuries leaving them unable to work, or work for a short period of time, which has drastically affected their lives.
